Barn-inspired Passivhaus home costs virtually nothing to run

Energy-smart homes needn’t look futuristic—just ask Gresford Architects, the UK-based firm behind this energy-efficient dwelling that looks just like a “normal” English countryside home. Located in the village of Chieveley in West Berkshire, the tall gabled building was crafted as a modern reinterpretation of the region’s timber barns. Despite its simple appearance, the “Old Water Tower” boasts an ultra-low energy footprint that meets rigorous Passivhaus standards.

US Representative sponsors food waste bill

Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) is sponsoring the bill, which would address food waste in four areas–at the consumer level, in grocery stores and restaurants, in schools and other institutions, and on farms, according to the news release from her office. The Food Recovery Act includes nearly two dozen provisions to reduce food waste.
