Zero Waste

UN Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs
The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

What we think of as trash is mostly waste. We put assets in the trash and pay to have them taken away.

Zero Waste is a lens which can help businesses reduce risks and create opportunities. It’s also a goal that we have an obligation to seek. This means rethinking the ways in which we do business. We need to assess the current state to determine what we can continue doing, as well as what needs to change. From there, we can test possibilities and work towards better solutions.

We no longer have to determine what issues and opportunities are most important for businesses to be concerned with as UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) now provide us with a road map. The 17 Goals and 169 Targets that fall under the SDGs seem daunting at first, but with careful analysis they can be woven into a firm’s strategy, possibly affording competitive advantages while helping to mitigate risks.

It’s time to give our businesses a rethink. We can find different materials to use, and different outputs to create, which will bring us in better alignment with natural systems, while improving the lives across the board. If we can set this goal, and commit to seeking continual improvement, we can reduce the harmful impacts we currently create, and allow our natural systems to recover.
